These rolled muslin roses make great shabby chic decor touches! They are easy and quick to make. I have put them on everything from pillows to mason jars. I will also teach you how to make shabby frayed muslin ribbon. It is so quick and simple it will blow you away! The uses for the ribbon are endless!
Supplies:
1) Felt
2) Muslin Fabric
3) Low Temp Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
4) Scissors
Step 1:
First you want to cut the felt into the squares. Cut the squares to the size you want your flowers to be. I made my squares to about 2x2 inches,
Step 2:
Cut the squares into circles by rounding out the corners. This is a fast and easy way to make a bunch of circles the same size. They don't need to be perfectly round by any means.
How to make Shabby Muslin Ribbon:
Step 3:
Now it's time to make the muslin ribbon. Start with a piece of muslin fabric. It can be cut to the length you need for the roses, or you can use a whole bolt and make an extra long ribbon.
Step 4:
Make a cut about 2 inches from the edge of your muslin. This will be the beginning of your ribbon. The ribbon will be as wide as you make the first cut to be. So this will be a 2 inch width ribbon.
Grab each side of the cut muslin, Hold them firmly and pull the sides in opposite directions. This will cause the fabric to rip along the grain where you made the starting cut. It will keep that approximate width all the way down the piece of fabric for an even ribbon. I do this with whole bolts of muslin to make 20 yard long ribbons. Its is so easy! The edges get a prefect fray to boot!
Finished Ribbon:
Step 6:
Begin the rose by rolling the muslin ribbon into a rope shape.
Step 7:
Put a dab of hot glue at the center of a felt circle.
Step 8:
Wait a few seconds until the glue is a touchable temp. Place the end of the twisted rope into the glue and start to make a spiral around the middle.
Step 9:
Apply more glue to the felt.
Keep forming the spiral around the center, building on the layers as you go. Adding more glue after each ring and continuing to twist the ribbon into a rope.
Step 11:
Cut the ribbon and leave about a two inch tail once you get to the edge of the felt.
Step 12:
Turn over the rose and put a dab of glue on the back edge of the felt.
Step 13:
Twist the tail and place it into the glue to finish off the rose.
And presto! A beautiful muslin shabby chic rose ready to use in all your craft creations!
